The Jeep Awarded a Purple Heart

It’s been a banner year for the Jeep. It turned 75-years old. Celebrations, stories and special editions have popped up often this year. But none more special or awe-inspiring as an ad about Jeep having been awarded a Purple Heart.

On Jeep’s social media pages this Veterans Day, tribute was paid to “Old Faithful,” a Jeep vehicle that during WWI led the United States Marine Corps through shelling by the Japanese during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1943 and two beach landings.

The Old Faithful was a command vehicle which traveled over 11,000 miles of jungle and served four Marine generals. It transported every visiting official and Marine officer on two battle-torn islands. In 1944, Old Faithful was retired and awarded a Purple Heart for its service. Of course, it is was symbolic gesture as only veterans can receive medals upon their honorable discharge. And, Old Faithful’s service continued after the war to tour and appear in exhibitions.

#Jeep”Old Faithful” is the first and only vehicle to be awarded a Purple Heart.
