Remember The Subaru Baja?

Subaru Truck

The Subaru Baja. A compact pickup that hit the North American market after the International Auto Show back in January 2001. It was the successor to the Brat pickup, something a little smaller, and they were both based Subaru’s wagon platform. Well, since Hurricane Harvey and Irma hit Texas and Florida, the market for mid-size pickup trucks is booming. Pine Belt Subaru thinks this is the perfect time for our automaker to bring back the Baja.

Thanks To Harvey And Irma

Hundreds of thousands of vehicles were destroyed in Texas and Florida. Midsize pickup interest has skyrocketed 26% in Houston since Harvey came around, according to data from Jumpstart Automotive Media. Shoppers in Florida have also been looking for pickups since Irma hit. Interest is up 21% across the entire state and 26% in Miami alone. If Pine Belt Subaru learned anything from these disasters, it’s that Subaru could cash in on the explosion of mid-size pickup sales. It only took three weeks to reveal a lot about American’s buying trends, as least in these two states.

If Anything Happens, We’re Hoping For Updated First

If our Subaru dealer NJ was being completely honest, the Baja wasn’t the perfect vehicle. It only held four passengers and was missing a middle seat. Only a small part of the midgate folded down making it hard to haul extra cargo. The back bed was a little smaller than Pine Belt Subaru had hoped for, too. Well, there’s always room for improvement and the explosion of the mid-size pickup market could be the perfect time to resurrect the Baja into something new.

A new Global Platform has been developed for every new-generation vehicles, like the Ascent 3-Row crossover. The larger versions Platform, the Ascent SUV, could also be used as a launching point for a new Baja. Make a few changes to the outside design, cut off the back and voila! You’ve got an awesome 4-door, all-wheel-drive pickup. Manufacture it alongside the Ascent 3-Row in Indiana, offer with the new 2.5-liter direct injection four-cylinder boxer or 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine. It could be amazing.

Keep Dreaming With Pine Belt Subaru

Pine Belt Subaru might be dreaming but we think a revamped Baja would be a hot-ticket item in the American pickup market to compete with the Nissan Frontier, Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma and Honda Ridgeline.
