At Pine Belt in Lakewood, NJ, we are celebrating 80 years in the business of selling and servicing automobiles. One of the hardest parts of our business is finding enough service personnel. If you know a graduating senior, or someone looking to transition careers who loves cars, we encourage them to consider hands-on automotive service or collision-repair programs offered at many community and two-year college institutions. Bump that up a notch to specialized training in diesel or busses and you’ve increased your earning potential.
Not Just a Wrench Anymore
In current curriculums, automotive mechanics use a laptop just as often or more often than a wrench. Computers are used more often to diagnose and fix automotive problems. These days, mechanics in training have to learn about sensors, software and other electronic technology. These are the buzzwords that dealers love to see on an application or resume.
It’s no surprise that MIT and Silicon Valley alum are the engineers developing autonomous vehicles. Young men and women are going to have to understand a whole new level of technology to repair these vehicles. Now is the time to understand how to repair this technology so that you can be super-marketable when these vehicles hit the road. General Motors will actually be sending to market its first semi-autonomous vehicle in 2018!
Don’t underestimate the talents of the women in your family looking for a career. The trade association, Women in Auto Care, award some pretty nice scholarships to women applying to auto repair programs. Auto repair combined with business management training put women at the front of the line for higher positions within the industry where they are underrepresented.
