It was a supercar showdown to end all supercar showdowns: the Dodge Challenger Hellcat took on the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the result was nothing short of impressive.
They both are considered one of the most powerful cars in Amercia. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has a 650 horsepower matched with a six-speed manual gearbox. The Dodge Challenger Hellcat has 707 horsepower mated with 10-speed automatic transmission. In spite of the difference in horsepower, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 proved to be a true contender on the drag strip for the Dodge Challenger Hellcat.
It’s true, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat has more power under the hood than the Camaro ZL1. Of course, you’d think that the Hellcat would win the race. It did, but it wasn’t the difference in power that decided the race between the two adversaries. The Drive magazine said the Chevrolet lost the matchup due to its manual gearbox. “The only time the Hellcat pulled ahead of the ZL1 was when he was shifting. He was not speeding shifting on the car, so, he was lifting off to shift, whereas the automatic, I just kept my foot on the ground and kept going,” said John Hennessey, the driver of the Dodge Challenger Hellcat.
Yes, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat got the prize. However, it was reported that the real win went to the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. After all, the ZL1 was able to keep up with the Hellcat. If both cars had had automatic transmissions, the battle would surely have been neck-and-neck.
