In our blogs we make mention of the award-winning Pentastar V-6 engine without much explanation about why this is such an amazing engine. In this, the second part of “What’s the Deal—Pentastar V-6,” we complete our exploration of the Pentastar V-6 engine and why it is so incredible.
Also improved in the upgraded Pentastar V-6 is the variable-valve timing system. Chrysler’s VVT system is engineered to require less oil for the engine to function which improves efficiency.
The Pentastar V-6 engine has an exhaust gas recirculation cooling system. When the system is cool, it reduces emissions and provides less noise with knock-free engine operation.
The most impressive improvement Chrysler engineers made to the Pentastar V-6 was to add the variable valve lift. A valve operates in low-lift mode to provide better torque production to improve fuel efficiency. But when greater power is needed, the engine switches to a higher valve lift. It can now operate at higher valve lifts to 70 degrees from 50. Just this improvement increased the efficiency of the engine by 2.7 percent. This in itself is an engineering marvel.
Improvements to the Pentastar V-6 engine for 2016 model vehicles resulted in the addition of 13 pounds to the engine’s powerplant, but overall, the engine weighs four pounds less. What’s the Deal? Chrysler Engineering—it’s the real deal.
